Caring for your mermaid tail

Mermaid tails care is important to keep your mermaid tail like new for a very long time. Now you are a proud owner of your own mermaid tail from Making Mermaids, accordingly you should observe the following care and usage instructions.

Monofins were developed specifically for freediving and mermaiding. Therefore they are powerful and classed as proper swimming equipment. Fabric tail skins, on the other hand, are only made from a swimwear fabric. If you accidentally hit the swimming pool wall with the monofin, it is unlikely that it will be much damaged, apart from a few possible scratches. However, the fabric cover will probably not put it away so easily. The tail skin on your mermaid tail is there to make you feel like a real mermaid or merman. This is ideal for swimming or posing for photos. However, it is not suitable for coming into contact with hard or rough surfaces, as this can cause abrasion marks and holes. Especially “sliding around” on sharp, hard or rough surfaces leads to premature wear of your mermaid skin. Depending on the use, you can significantly reduce or extend the wear and tear on your fish skin.

Extend the Life of your Tail Skin
  • Change only on soft surfaces (towel, yoga mat or similar)
  • Never stand in your mermaid tail (neither on land nor in the water)
  • Avoid sitting on hard surfaces
  • Avoid kicking the floor or against the pool wall
  • Don’t balance on the tips of your fins on the swimming pool floor
  • After use in chlorine or salt water, rinse your mermaid tail with fresh water and let it dry completely
  • Avoid direct sunlight when drying

Additional tips:

  • Make your tail skin even more durable by coating the fabric on the tips of the fin and the underside of the fin (where the foot pockets of the monofin are) with a colourless silicone
  • If, despite taking precautionary measures, at some point, you have to say goodbye to your tail skin, you can buy a new fabric cover. By the way, of course, you can also get a new fish skin when you have grown or just feel like a new colour.

Silicon Tail Care instructions

In contrast to the fabric tails, mermaid tails made of silicone are much more robust. The silicone is thicker than fabric and therefore not easily injured. Nevertheless, a silicone mermaid tail also needs love and proper handling in order to remain healthy and beautiful for a long time. In the following we will give you some silicone mermaid tail care instructions on how to do this. Correct handling begins when you put on your silicone tail. As with the fabric tails, a soft pad is recommended for putting on. In any case, you should avoid pulling on attached side fins. Otherwise these can easily be damaged. It is also important to avoid contact with fingernails and other pointed, sharp or hard objects.

  • Avoid drying the tail in direct sun

Additional tips:

  • Every now and then you can bathe your silicone fin in a mixture of white vinegar and water. Then rinse it off again thoroughly
  • Small scratch marks or holes (for example from sharp rocks) can be repaired with construction silicone. Before repairing, clean and degrease the tail
  • To dry the silicone tail from the inside, hang it upside down. Optionally, insert a pool noodle and place a fan in front of the opening
