About the course
This short non-certified course expertly combines theory and principles with a confined water skill development session to introduce the fun of fundamental mermaid diving. The course covers the background and culture of mermaid diving, primary safety considerations, equipment, and basic water skills.
Academic
To enrol in our Ā ‘Become a Mermaid’Ā© course, ideal for aspiring mermaids from 6 to 10yo, your child must be able to swim at least 25m/80ft without swim aids, able to float comfortably at the surface for at least 3 mins and in good physical health. No prior snorkelling, skin diving or freediving experience is required.
The Making Mermaids ‘Become a Mermaid’Ā© course consists of two phases:
- Your child will study independently using our ‘Become a Mermaid’Ā© Videos and Tutorials with the assistance of an adult supervisor or parent (or your instructor may conduct an extra class session if necessary).
- A two-hour confined water (pool or pool-like location) session to learn and practice basic mermaid diving skills, problem prevention and handling, and how to make mermaid dives.
Equipment
In the ‘Become a Mermaid’Ā© course, your child will use a monofin (i.e. mermaid tail), mask, snorkel and fins. They may also wear a wetsuit and weight belt if necessary. Using gear designed specifically for mermaiding is best, and that’s why we’ve got school gear they can try out. If they feel more comfortable, it’s possible to use their own mermaiding, snorkelling or free-diving gear.
