About the course
This short Certified Basic Mermaid course is for you if you’re new to using a monofin. It expertly combines theory and principles with a confined water skill development session to introduce the fun of fundamental mermaid diving. The course covers the background and culture of mermaid diving, primary safety considerations, equipment, and basic water skills.
Academic
To enrol in the Certified Basic Mermaid course, you must be at least six years old. You need to be able to swim at least 25m/80ft without swim aids, able to float comfortably at the surface for at least 3 mins and in good physical health. No prior snorkelling, skin diving or freediving course completion is required.
The Certified Basic Mermaid course consists of two phases:
- You’ll study independently using Certified Basic Mermaid e-Learning (or your instructor may conduct class sessions if unavailable in your language).
- A two-hour confined water (pool or pool-like location) session to learn and practice basic mermaid diving skills, problem prevention and handling, and how to make mermaid dives.
Equipment
In the Certified Basic Mermaid course, you will use a monofin (i.e. mermaid tail), mask, snorkel and fins. You may also wear a wetsuit and weight belt if you wish. Using gear designed specifically for mermaiding is best, and that’s why we’ve got school gear you can try out. If you feel more comfortable, it’s still possible to use your own snorkelling or free-diving gear.
